At the heart of Corsica (Corse) are mountains covered with lush green chestnut and pine forests. Rolling pastures and fragrant Mediterranean scrubland can be found on the coast and in the south. It is appropriate that the island resembles a bunch of ripe grapes because vine production and grape cultivation here are exceptional and date back over 3000 years. Bastia, in the north, is famous for being laidback yet lively, not too heavy on tourists.

In contrast to the rugged interior, the 1000 km coastline hosts a discreet number of trendy seaside towns. Ajaccio and Golfe de Porto lie on the west coast and are home to cliffs that plunge into the sea. Calvi, in the northeast, sports glistening beaches and bays. The citadel of Bonifacio rests on a limestone cliff on the island's southeast corner and is but a stone's throw from Sardinia.

Up to the 19th Century the coastal area was considered unimportant and too easily open to invasion. It is for this reason that even today the true culture of Corsica centers around the town of Corte, in the area of Centru di Corsica. This rough inland region is host to typical Corsican cuisine such as cured sausages, cheeses and lamb seasoned with wild herbs, and it is where you will hear Corsu, the local language, and get a taste of the island's distinctive customs and festivals. Here the mountains remain covered with snow often until the month of July and it is a great place to beat the summer heat. Mountain trails are well marked and meticulously cared for and thus hiking becomes an exceptional experience.
